Day two of being snowed in. I woke up to 4 degree weather. Charlie was up awake before me, and he said it was 3 degrees when he got up. Oh, Mylanta! I have lived in Texas since I was 10, and it has NEVER gotten down into the single digits. NEVER.
I was not particularly thrilled at the thought of tromping out to check on the chickens in the freezing weather, but I wanted to see how they were doing, so out I trudged in two pairs of pants & socks, two coats & a helmet liner my dad gave to my husband. I was straight pimpin’, y’all while hauling a 2 gallon watering can full of warm water & a 3 quart poultry waterer through the snow. The snow was quite blinding. I regretted not wearing my sunglasses too!
As expected the chickens were still holed up in their coop. Despite the heat lamps we put in the coops both waterers froze over. But all of them appeared to be in pretty good shape – even my broody mama that was all alone.
We checked for eggs several times during the day so that they didn’t freeze. In spite of the cold the girls laid about a dozen eggs on Tuesday.
We didn’t get affected by rolling blackouts, but our cousin who lives a few miles away did. They couldn’t keep their house warm with the central heat, so Charlie and our son took them some wood so they could heat their house.
Later that day we found out his cousin was diagnosed with CV-19, so we took him some Zinc, Quercetin & Vitamin D. After dropping those items off, we make a quick trip to Wal-Mart since we were in the neighborhood. Talk about a madhouse. The bread aisle was practically empty, but I did manage to find a couple loaves of sweet bread. The milk cooler was likewise decimated, but I did find a half gallon of A2 milk & 2%. We don’t drink a lot of milk or eat a lot of bread, but we had told a couple of friends they could come stay with us, so we wanted to have those items available if they took us up on our offer. I also grabbed some carrots for beef stew & buttermilk for pancakes for the next day.
