Yep. Freezing last week and running the air conditioner this week. Gotta love Texas weather! But I am NOT complaining! And, yeah, I know. I haven’t been on in a few days. I told you it was a sorta daily blog. It’s tax season & I lost a week of working because of the weather last week, so not a lot of time to devote to vanity projects.
My seedlings are doing well. I potted up my last eggplant, tomatoes & pepper plants out of the vermiculite last week, and they are really taking off. I water them a 2-3 times a week with 1/2 strength Neptune’s Harvest organic liquid fertilizer. The downside to the fertilizer is that it kinda makes my office smell like dead fish.
Honestly this week has felt like Spring, and my plants in the garden are loving it. I even have some little tiny carrot seedlings popping up. So I may wind up with 3 or 4 carrots. Unfortunately the seed filled straw I bought from Tractor Supply is also enjoying our Spring-like weather. I may have already mentioned this on a previous blog post, but it bears repeating. DO NOT BUY STRAW FROM TRACTOR SUPPLY. It’s full of seeds which are emerging all over my garden after I mulched it with this straw to help prevent water loss and – you guessed it – WEEDS! The straw is preventing weeds, but I had not intended on becoming a wheat farmer. Plus I have now adulterated my beautiful organic soil with that (most likely) GMO, roundup soaked grain. ugh!
On the plus side my baby chicks are stinking adorable, and I’m trying to convince them (and their mama) that I have no ill intentions. Today I started bribing her with oats aka chicken crack. She eyed me suspiciously, but when dropped a few pieces down she called the babies over to share with them. I did a short live stream of it over at the Just Add Liberty Facebook page. About halfway through the video one of my other nosy hens jumped up to check out the goodies they were eating. Hopefully over the next week or two when the babies see me instead of running away they’ll run towards me because they’ll associate me with yummy treats. Their little tail feathers are starting to grow. And today while I watched them they were scratching all the shavings around so ferociously for such tiny creatures.
