Blooming Saucer Magnolia

One of the most unique trees on our property is our Saucer Magnolia tree.  Each spring before it puts out leaves it first adorns itself with lovely pink flowers. It was already budded out this year when our epic freeze descended for 5 days. The freeze killed the buds on every plant that was too eager for spring’s arrival, so I was shocked to see that darn thing start blooming like crazy this week. The pictures I took of it today aren’t that great. Today was a rather overcast, drizzly, cool day, & I took the photos in late afternoon. Hopefully you can tell how pretty this tree is. For me it’s a welcome sight since nothing else is blooming right now – except dandelions.

I was pretty happy to see it was raining today. I still don’t have water hooked up in the new raised beds yet, so I was facing a day of hand watering my veggies. Thankfully Mother Nature decided to lend me a hand with that. I popped out to check on my plants this afternoon & pull out some of that ()*#)(*#@ wheat that keeps sprouting, and it looked like the mustard greens had grown several centimeters since just yesterday. I prolly need to think about fertilizing the onions. This is my first year to grow them, but I’ve heard they are heavy feeders. Guess who’ll be lugging a watering can o the garden tomorrow!?

Hopefully tomorrow I can get my asparagus planted & help hubby attach the cattle panels to the raised beds.  My sugar snap peas are starting to look for something to climb on.

The chicks are growing almost as fast as the mustard greens. They are getting a little more bold when I feed them oats. They still wait for their mama to call them over, but they waste no time in doing so! I had two escapees from the chicken yard today, so I had to bribe them back in with a chick starter snack. Fortunately I didn’t have to bribe too hard, because they were eager to get back in the safe confines of their fence. I have a few chickens that still insist on laying their eggs under the poop boxes in the coop despite the fact that they are super nice, clean nest boxes available to them just a few feet away. I’ll never understand why chickens do some of the things they do.

Today was the first day I took the seedlings out to harden them off. I thought we had some upper 30’s weather predicted for this weekend, but...
