We finally put up cattle panels on one of my garden beds. My sugar snap peas will be ready to climb very, very soon, so they’ll be thrilled when they discover their new trellis. Yes. I am anthropomorphizing plants. You spend enough time in the garden, and you’ll do it too. With the addition of the trellis to one of the beds, we only have three more beds remaining. But I don’t have any of my spring garden out yet, so I still have time to get those beds finished. Speaking of getting them finished I still have about 1 & 2/3 of the beds to finish putting my soil mixture in. I’ll continue to peck away at it until I get them all done. But spring planting time is just around the corner, so I need to get a move on!
In addition to getting the cattle panels put up I also got my asparagus bed planted. It’s my first time trying to grow asparagus, and I may have overplanted – 16 plants in one 4 X 4 bed. But nothing ventured nothing gained. It’s all a learning experience, and as much asparagus as we eat around here it’ll be nice to have a source in our backyard. I’m not sure how they’ll grow in East Texas. I’ve heard it may be too hot, but we shall see. They are planted in a spot where they’ll get plenty of afternoon shade, so hopefully that will be their saving grace during our brutal summers.
I was rather dismayed to discover that even with our beds raised 18+ inches off the ground rabbits are still able to jump up in there. And how do I know there has been a bunny in the beds? Because I found poo proof. See pic below. The rabbits never really bothered my garden too much when my beds were in the old location, but they did like my eggplants & green beans. And the bed it hopped in doesn’t even have any plants in it. I guess it was just a curious cottontail.
Oh & I took a better picture of the Saucer Magnolia today. See it below.
